Olympic torch
Portable torch, or a replica thereof, as approved by the IOC and intended for combustion of the Olympic flame. Olympic torches are used, together with miners’ lamps, for transporting the Olympic flame from Olympia (Greece) to the host city, up to the Olympic stadium. (See Olympic Charter Rules 13, 55)

lighting of the Olympic flame
Traditional ritual of the opening ceremony. Olympic torch, carried from Olympia, Greece, is brought into the stadium by runners relaying it to each other. The flame should pass the Tribune of Honor upon entry and then relay around the perimeter of the field 360 degrees in view of the audience. The last runner is customarily an Olympic athlete. The moment of the lighting of the cauldron and the lit cauldron should be positioned so that all audience members in the Olympic stadium can view it. The flame shall not be extinguished until the closing of the Olympic Games.
